Search Visibility (SEO) & Lead Generation Tip for Trades: Align Your Website + GBP Custom Services

If you’re a Home Improvement Trade looking to improve your search visibility and generate more leads, a simple SEO tactic you can implement is this:

Align the services listed on your website and Google Business Profile (by using custom services).

According to Whitespark’s 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors report, having a dedicated page for each service is the most important factor influencing local organic rankings.

Google Business Profile services matter too. Whitespark’s research highlights the presence of GBP services and keywords within services as factors that can influence local search rankings.

The principle is relatively simple:

If a service is commercially important enough for you to want more enquiries for it, that service should usually be clearly represented across both your website and Google Business Profile.

For example, a roofing company might have dedicated website pages for Roof Repairs, Flat Roofing and Emergency Roofing, while its Google Business Profile simply lists a generic service such as Roofing.

An electrician might have website pages targeting EV Charger Installation, EICRs and Rewires, but those services aren’t properly reflected on their Google Business Profile.

As part of our Local SEO for Trades work at Marketing for Trades, we try to create much stronger alignment between a client’s website and their Google Business Profile.

Start With the Services You Actually Want to Rank For

Before adding dozens of services to your website and Google Business Profile, think strategically.

What are the commercially important services you actually want to generate enquiries for?

You should also consider the search demand for those services.

Tools such as Google Keyword Planner can help you understand what potential customers are actually searching for and approximately how much monthly search demand exists around different services and keywords.

But search volume isn’t the only consideration.

You also need to understand what work the business actually wants more of.

A Real Example: Bonum Plastering

We’ve recently onboarded Bonum Plastering as a new client, where we’ll be managing their SEO, wider Search Visibility and lead generation.

One of the questions we asked during onboarding was:

What plastering services do you provide, and which plastering enquiries do you actually want more of?

They told us they wanted to generate more enquiries for:

  • Reskimming
  • Patchwork plaster repairs
  • Rendering

They weren’t particularly interested in generating enquiries for moulding or coving.

That information is important.

Rather than blindly creating pages around every service a plasterer could offer, we can build their Search Visibility strategy around the services that are commercially important to the business.

We’ll combine that information with keyword and search-demand research and then build out relevant website pages and Google Business Profile services accordingly.

It’s a relatively simple example of why SEO shouldn’t start with keywords alone.

It should start with understanding the business.

Create Dedicated Website Service Pages

As mentioned earlier, Whitespark’s Local Search Ranking Factors research places dedicated service pages among the most important factors for local organic rankings.

One of the biggest mistakes we see on Trades websites is having every service listed on a single generic Services page, without dedicated pages for the individual services the business actually wants to rank for.

Instead, build your website architecture around those services.

For example:

Roofing Services

→ Roof Repairs
→ Flat Roofing
→ New Roofs
→ Emergency Roofing
→ Chimney Repairs

Each important service can then have a dedicated page explaining:

  • What the service involves
  • Who it’s for
  • The locations you cover
  • Relevant previous projects
  • Frequently asked questions
  • How someone can enquire

This gives each important service a much stronger home on your website.

It also gives search platforms more specific information about what your business actually does.

And increasingly, that isn’t just relevant to traditional Google search.

A clear, structured website can also help other search platforms — including Bing and AI-powered search experiences such as ChatGPT — understand your business, services, expertise and locations.

Then Align Your Google Business Profile Services

Once your website services are clear, move over to your Google Business Profile.

Google allows eligible businesses to add and edit the services displayed on their profile, including custom services.

Go through your profile and compare those services against the important services you’ve identified on your website.

For example, with Bonum Plastering we might have:

Patchwork Plaster Repairs

Then underneath that service, we’d add a concise description explaining what the service involves and where it’s provided.

The objective isn’t to stuff as many keywords as possible into the description.

Instead, write an accurate description that naturally communicates the service and relevant location.

That helps create alignment between what the business communicates on its website and what it communicates through its Google Business Profile.

Don’t Forget Your Primary Locations

The same principle applies to geography.

Your website should make it clear where you operate, while your Google Business Profile should accurately represent your genuine service area.

For a local Trade, you’re trying to help search platforms understand two fundamental things:

What do you do?

and

Where do you do it?

That’s why service and location relevance are so important when we’re working on Local SEO for Trades.

If you’re a bathroom installer targeting High Wycombe, for example, your website content, service pages, Google Business Profile and wider local signals should collectively make that relationship clear.

That doesn’t mean repeatedly stuffing “Bathroom Installer High Wycombe” onto every page.

It means creating consistent, useful information that accurately represents the business.

A Simple Local SEO Check You Can Do Today

Open your website in one tab and your Google Business Profile in another.

Then compare them.

Ask yourself:

  • What are the 5–10 services we most want to generate leads for?
  • Is there genuine search demand for those services?
  • Does each important service have enough visibility on our website?
  • Do our most important services warrant dedicated pages?
  • Are those services accurately reflected within our Google Business Profile?
  • Are our service names and descriptions clear and consistent?
  • Do both platforms accurately communicate the locations we serve?
  • Are relevant service pages internally linked from other useful content?

You’ll probably identify several small improvements within 10–15 minutes.

And that’s often what good Local SEO looks like.

Small SEO Improvements Add Up

There’s rarely one magic change that suddenly takes a Trade from invisible to #1 or Top 3 across Search platforms.

Search Visibility is influenced by lots of different channels, signals and factors.

As part of our SEO for Trades service, we manage areas including:

  • Your website
  • Your Google Business Profile
  • Your citations
  • Your reviews and reputation
  • Your content
  • Your backlinks

That’s also reflected in the wider Marketing for Trades approach, which manages website, GBP, citation, content and reputation activity together rather than treating them as completely separate channels.

Aligning your website services with your Google Business Profile services is just one of those improvements.

It might take 20 minutes.

But combine it with better service pages, stronger internal linking, accurate citations, regular content, reviews and a properly optimised Google Business Profile, and you’re building a much stronger foundation for Search Visibility.

Final Thoughts

If you’re investing in Local SEO for your Trades business, don’t think about your website and Google Business Profile separately.

They should reinforce one another.

Start with the services that actually matter commercially.

Research what potential customers are searching for.

Build useful website pages around those services.

Reflect those services accurately within your Google Business Profile.

And make sure your locations and wider business information are consistent.

The clearer your digital footprint becomes, the easier it is for customers and Search platforms including Google, Bing and LLMs such as ChatGPT to understand what your business does.

And ultimately, greater Search Visibility gives you more opportunities to appear when homeowners are actively searching for the services you provide.
